Viennese Secession

The Viennese Secession style emerged in Austria. It was founded in 1897 by a group of 19 Viennese artists. As an artistic renewal project, it sought to reinterpret past styles in opposition to industrial production.

  1. In 1903, Koloman Moser, together with Josef Hoffmann, founded the 'Wiener Werkstätte' (Vienna Workshops).

One of the main characteristics of the style is that it sought inspiration in nature, symbolism, and Japanese conceptual art, striving for elegance and sobriety of form.

  1. They based their work on the concept of the 'Gesamtkunstwerk' (total work of art), influenced by the ideas of the English Arts and Crafts movement. They aspired to an integration of the different arts (painting, sculpture, architecture, and applied arts).

  1. An example of architecture is the Secession Building in Vienna.
